Understanding the wildfire smoke forecast

This map animates the forecast concentration of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) — the main health concern in wildfire smoke — at ground level across Canada and the US. The smoke plume comes from Environment and Climate Change Canada's RAQDPS wildfire model, which runs twice daily and forecasts hourly out to roughly 72 hours; live active-fire hotspots come from Natural Resources Canada's CWFIS. The animated smoke and surface PM2.5 forecast comes from Environment and Climate Change Canada's (ECCC) RAQDPS wildfire smoke-plume model, and active-fire hotspots come from Natural Resources Canada's Canadian Wildland Fire Information System (CWFIS).

How often is the forecast updated?

The model runs twice daily and forecasts hourly out to roughly 72 hours.

What is PM2.5?

PM2.5 is fine particulate matter 2.5 microns or smaller — the main health concern in wildfire smoke. It is measured in micrograms per cubic metre (µg/m³); higher values mean poorer air quality.

Does wildfire smoke or ash damage a roof?

Smoke and settled ash do not damage an aluminum roof — the coated surface rinses clean with a garden hose once the air clears. The real roof risk during fire season is wind-blown embers from a nearby fire, which is why keeping gutters clear of dry debris and choosing a non-combustible, Class A fire-rated roof covering matter in wildfire-prone regions.
